X-rays are an important part of many visits to the dentist, offering a peek inside your teeth to check for various issues. To minimize the exposure to radiation and other problems associated with x-rays, many dentists have adopted a new form of radiography: digital x-rays.
Here is a look at the digital x-ray technology used by your local dentist and oral surgeon in Queens:
What Is Digital Radiography?
Digital radiography captures patient’s x-rays digitally, rather than on film, which is the traditional method. The digital machines then immediately upload the images to an in-office computer, so your dentist can see them right away. Digital images can be electronically stored, so they can immediately be sent over the Internet to other labs, dentists, or your insurance company.
What Are the Benefits?
- Less Radiation: Digital imaging exposes patients to about half as much radiation as traditional x-rays. This means the process is safer for you and those working in the office. The hazardous materials previously used to develop x-ray film are also now obsolete, so there is less danger of accidents and overexposure to radioactive elements.
- Less Time: Dental technicians used to have to develop x-ray film, leaving you to wait for far too long before the images could be examined. Now, the images are uploaded immediately, making your visit shorter and getting your results faster. In addition, your dentist can now enlarge, colorize, and zoom in on your images, so he can make a better diagnosis. Before, he may have had to send it for a second opinion, adding days between your office visit and the tooth extraction, dental implant, or other oral surgery that could finally sooth your pain.

An apicoectomy is a procedure in which an oral surgeon removes the end of a tooth root due to persistent infection following root canal therapy. This is not the same as a root resection, which removes the entire tooth root rather than just a piece. Read on for more information on what to expect from an apicoectomy.
Your oral surgeon may instruct you to use an antimicrobial mouthwash, anti-inflammatory medications, and antibiotics prior to the apicoect omy procedure to help control the level of bacteria in your mouth and reduce the chances of spreading the infection. It is important to discuss any health conditions with your oral surgeon to identify any risk factors or possible anesthesia complications.
After numbing the area with a local anesthetic, your oral surgeon will make a small incision in the gum tissue and lift it away from the affected tooth in order to access the bone. A small opening will then be made within the bone to expose the root before the tip is removed and sealed with a filling. In some cases, your oral surgeon may place donor bone into the surgical opening to improve bone growth following the procedure. The incision is then closed with sutures that can be removed approximately one week after surgery. As with any procedure, you will want to see your oral surgeon for all follow up appointments to ensure the efficacy of the treatment.

Every dental implant is composed of three basic parts. Take a look at this video to learn more about each.
As this video shows, the implant itself is the titanium piece that is inserted into the jawbone. This implant attaches to the titanium, stainless steel, or high-noble post or abutment—which screws the prosthesis securely in place. The last component of the dental implant is the tooth-shaped crown.

A number of individuals lose their permanent teeth due to gum disease, extreme tooth decay, failed root canal therapy, or dental trauma. In fact, studies by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons show that by age 74, 26 percent of all adults will have lost all of their permanent teeth. Fortunately, many oral surgeons offer dental implants as an alternative to traditional dentures and dental bridges.
There are several factors to take into consideration when determining your candidacy for dental implants—especially your current health status. Individuals who are non-smokers and free from chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure are usually good candidates for dental implants. Other conditions, such as gum disease and periodontitis, should be treated before initiating the dental implant placement process. It is also important that candidates have sufficient jawbone density, as this can affect the body’s ability to provide support for the dental implants. Your oral surgeon may recommend a bone grafting procedure prior to the placement of dental implants if you are suffering from bone loss.
Your lifestyle factors can also help determine whether or not dental implants are the right option for you. For example, dental implants may be the perfect solution for you if your dentures or bridges are preventing you from enjoying your favorite foods. Unlike dentures that can slide out of place while eating, dental implants are permanently attached inside the jawbone using a titanium implant, making them as strong and secure as your natural teeth.
